  18. 1) All Windows operating systems should support the Times New Roman typeface, which is used on this disc.  If the fonts look oversized and are cropped, then somehow this font is missing from your system, and you need to get it installed.  Talk to your network administrator to get Times New Roman on your computer and you'll be all set.  Start the disc over and it should look great!

  21. 2) Should you want to take notes while running the NIDA CD-ROM, you need to do the following before starting the disc:

  23. Open "Notepad," which is a basic text editing program found on all PCs. Next put the NIDA disc in and start.  When you want to take notes press Alt-Tab and take notes in "Notepad." When you are ready to return to the program, pressing Alt-Tab again will take you back.

  26. 3) Adobe Acrobat Reader will automatically load so you can read the PDF files, found via the "Print Lesson" button. A Windows PC will continuously display each file that the user selects to open.

  28. 4) Windows PCs need to have an active internet web browser installed, in order to have access to the NIH website. On some computers, this CD-ROM will not play unless a browser is detected in that computer's programs.

  30. 5) On some Windows 2000 machines you will need to download DirectX from Microsoft to be able to hear the audio portion of the CD. 
  31. To download Direct X open your web browser and go to:

  35. For Windows 2000 or other operating systems find your system and download the update.

  37. If you do not currently have DirectX 8.0a installed, please download DirectX 8.0a for home users from the Microsoft Download Center.

  39. 6) Some Windows 2000 machines will not play audio correctly without starting the program from the NIDAWIN2000.exe. If you still experience problems with audio after downloading DirectX, quit the CDROM and using Explorer look at the files on the CDROM.  There you will find a file called NIDAWIN2000.exe. Double click that file and it will launch the NIDA CDROM in Windows 2000 mode. To keep the CD from autoloading into the regular mode hold down the "shift" key when you first put the CD in and it will keep it from autoloading so you can go directly to Explorer and launch the NIDAWIN2000.exe startup program from there.
